Procrastination is a tricky beast indeed. Here are some clutch ways for you to stop procrastinating, so that you can maximize your earning potential.
1. Move your work station
Sometimes a change of scenery can do wonders. If you're having trouble getting in the right headspace, try working from the conference room or if your boss is cool, a coffee shop. This would also be a great reason to put in a request for a laptop with IT.
2. Give yourself a ten minute timer
You can do just about anything for ten minutes. Put on a timer and work with wild abandon for ten minutes. You'll be surprised how freeing it is to have a time limit, and you might not want to stop when the timer is done.
3. Organize your to-do list by what scares you the most
We tend to put off things that scare us. When we live in a busy world, it's easy to find an excuse not to do something that terrifies you. After all, there's always something else that needs to be done today.
Write down everything that you need to do today. Then, on a separate piece of paper, copy that list, rearranging them so that they go from most-to-least fear-inducing. Once you realize that fear is motivating you to procrastinate, it's a lot easier to knock those scary things off your list.
4. Get active
If you're struggling from a sense of impotence-fueled anxiety, your best bet might be to get up and walk around. We can't control every aspect of our work lives— specifically the whims of our colleagues— and sometimes the best way to regain a sense of control, or to get over that mental block, is to get up and physically get moving. You'll be surprised what a little fresh air can do.
5. Use the buddy system
The chances are high that you are not the only person in your office who is struggling with procrastination. We all suffer more when we suffer in silence. Find a friend and set collective deadlines. Sometimes, it can be fun to put a bet on it— anything to incentivize your work. If you work in the same department, see who can get the most done in an hour. The winner gets 5 points, or $5, depending on how interesting you want to make it.
There you go. Five ways that you can stop procrastinating. Now get out there and tame the wild beast.
