Monitoring the available balance of your bank account is an important part of personal money management. The available balance on your account is the amount that is available for you to spend, withdraw or transfer to other accounts including any deposits or withdrawals that have not yet posted. When you know what your available balance is, you can make educated decisions about how you spend and invest your money. You can check an available balance on your bank account if you do not have an online banking account by having your account numbers nearby and with some concentration.
Flip over your ATM card to find your bank's customer service phone number that allows you to check your balance. Typically this is a toll-free phone number and is located at the top or bottom on the back of your card.
Call the customer service phone number for your bank that you located in Step 1. Listen for the welcome greeting on the phone system and follow the prompts. Depending on your bank's phone system, you may have to press 1 to hear phone prompts in English.
Following the phone system prompt, enter your Social Security or bank account number into your phone. Some telephone banking phone systems require you to enter your Social Security number; other systems require your account number. You can find your account number at the top of your mailed bank statements; your account number is also the last series of numbers listed on the bottom of your checks after your check and routing numbers.
Press the digits for your personal identification number that you created when you set up your account. If you do not have this code, go to your bank and ask them to reset your PIN; you will be asked to select a new code at this point that you can enter into the phone system to check your available balance.
Follow the prompts to access information about either your checking or savings account. You will be asked to enter a particular number on your telephone keypad to hear information about your checking account or another number for your savings account. Press the digit that corresponds with the type of account about which you wish to check the available balance.
Listen as the telephone banking voice reads your ledger balance, available balance and any recent transactions on your account. Your available balance is the amount of money you have available to spend, withdraw or invest at this particular moment, including any pending transactions that have not yet posted to your ledger balance.
