How to Redeem Chase Miles and Rewards

As a Chase Visa cardholder, you have access to Chase's Ultimate Rewards program, which gives you points you can redeem for various rewards. The amount you earn on purchases varies depending on the type of Chase Visa you have. Qualifying cards are the Chase Freedom, Chase Ink Cash, Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Ink Plus.

Ultimate Rewards Program

The Ultimate Rewards Program has two tiers:

  • Tier 1--Chase Freedom and Chase Ink Cash cardholders get 1 cent per point when redeeming rewards.
  • Tier 2--Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Ink Plus cardholders get at least 1.25 cents per point, sometimes more with special promotions.

Warning

The two Tier 2 cards have an annual fee of $95, while neither Tier 1 card has an annual fee.

Tip

Tier 2 cards also allow you to transfer points to outside travel rewards programs at a 1:1 ratio. Participating programs as of 2015 include British Airways, Southwest, United, Amtrak, Hyatt, and Marriott.

Redeeming Rewards

Log into your Chase Ultimate Rewards account using your Chase user ID and online banking password. Click on the "Use Points" link at the top of the page and choose whether you want to redeem for gift cards and merchandise or for travel.

Gift Cards and Merchandise

If you want to use points for gift cards and merchandise, browse through the available gift cards, which come from major retailers, restaurants, hotels and movie theaters such as:

  • Target
  • Starbucks
  • Hyatt
  • Royal Caribbean

Most gift cards come in denominations of $25, $50 and $100. When you decide, click on the "Claim It" button to add it to your shopping cart and then checkout.

You can also link your Chase card to your Amazon.com account and use your points to pay for Amazon.com orders. When you're ready to checkout through Amazon.com, choose the "pay with points" option to cover the purchase.

Travel

Use the Ultimate Rewards travel search tool to find your hotel, flight, car or activity. The search tool allows you to search most major airlines, hotel chains and rental car companies, similar to search tools like Kayak.com or Expedia.com. For example, if you need a flight, enter the departure and arrival cities and dates of travel. The search tool pulls up available flights and shows the price of the flights in points and dollars. When you find the travel you want, add the flight, hotel room or rental car you want to your shopping cart and check out using your points.

Tip

If you don't have enough points to cover the entire amount, you can use your Chase card to cover the remaining balance.
