How much is your used safe worth?

A new safe can cost anywhere from $50 to many thousands of dollars. In good condition, a used high-end one will usually hold it's value well. Antique safes are highly collectible and rare models are worth many times their initial retail price. Generally, on a percentage basis, the more you spent in the first place the more it's worth today. There are dozens of online safe retailers with used safes for sale. Calling them for quotes and looking at eBay auctions are easy ways to appraise your safe realistically.

Step 1

Scour the body of your safe for manufacturer and model information as well as to determine exact cosmetic and operational condition. Take measurements if not already known and note any modifications that have been made.

Step 2

Scan the used safe listings at a number of online retailers, including Megasafe, Lackasafe, and Security Safe USA. If you see an identical or very similar model to your safe, expect 60-80 percent of the retailer's price when selling to a private party.

Step 3

Find out what buyers are paying. By watching eBay auctions for safes similar to your own, you can gauge demand to see how easy yours will be to sell and view actual selling prices for used safes.
