A decision on a credit card application can come instantly if you are applying online or over the telephone--but not always. Approval sometimes requires more information, such as income verification. Or maybe you applied during a busy holiday shopping period and approvals are taking longer than normal. However, you may not have to wait long for an update. Virtually all the major credit card companies offer a variety of ways to check the status of your application.
Call the customer-service number for the credit card company. Tell the representative that you recently applied for a credit card and would like an update on the status. Provide the representative with any information needed to confirm your identity.
Visit the credit card company's website. Many major credit card companies allow you to check the status of your application on the website. Start by clicking on the "Customer Service" tab, then look for a menu item leading to application status updates. Click it and enter identifying information such as your Social Security number, home address and driver's license number.

Send a letter to the credit card company for a more formal response. Detail the name of the credit card you applied for and the date of your application. Include your name, address, Social Security number and telephone number. Mail the letter to the card company's customer-service department. Get the address from the credit card application brochure or from the website.
