When you've got a product to sell, marketing it will be one of your biggest keys to profitability. Etsy is an Internet marketplace that provides a variety of services to help you sell your items. As you prepare to sell with Etsy, an important step is the creation of a banner for your Etsy shop. Etsy's guidelines require banners to be 760 pixels by 100 pixels in jpg, png or gif format. With basic skills in working with an image-editing program, decide whether you want to make your own banner or crop and resize a photo to the required size.

New Graphic Image

Step 1

Open your image-editing program. Open a new image and set the width to 760 pixels and the height to 100 pixels. Set the resolution to 300 dpi. Fill the background layer image with a color or a pattern that fits your shop theme.

Step 2

Select the text tool and choose a font with a style that fits your shop. Make sure the font is easy to read. Size the font so it's the right size across the banner and choose a color that will contrast sharply from your background color. Enter the name of your Etsy shop, and center it across the banner.

Step 3

Add a small image or two on the right and left sides of the banner. Make the images fit your shop. For example, if you sell handmade shirts, you might use small images of your items.

Step 4

Merge the layers within the image-editing program. Name the banner and save it as a jpg, png or gif file.

Step 1

Open your image-editing program. Open the photograph of your choice within the image-editing program.

Step 2

Resize the photo or crop a portion of it that you wish to use for the banner. For example, if you sell handmade fishing poles, you might use a photo that shows a few of your poles against a simple background.

Step 3

Select the text tool and choose a font with a style that fits your shop. Make sure the font is easy to read. Size the font so it fits the banner and choose a color that will contrast sharply from the background of the photo. Position your cursor to enter the text at the proper place on the image so the text will sit against a simple area of the background. Enter the name of your Etsy shop.

Step 4

Merge the layers within the image-editing program. Name the banner and save it as a jpg file.

Tip

Etsy allows users to update and change banners any time. If you make a banner and later decide you don't like it, you can always make a new one. If you have trouble making your own banner, you might hire a professional to make your banner for you.
