How to Trace a Money Wire

Unlike putting a check in the mail and crossing your fingers, it is possible to keep track of your money through every stage of the process when you send money using a wire transfer. Know where your money is at all times by tracing your wire transfer.

Step 1

Get the procedure when you place your wire transfer. Whether you are using your bank or money transfer company, such as Western Union or Moneygram, ask about the tracking procedure when you place your transfer order. They will be able to give you the appropriate information, from online tracking instructions to phone numbers you can call to see where your money is located.

Step 2

Gather the information needed for tracking. Although every company has their own procedure, you will need some combination of a transaction number, your name, the recipient's name and the destination of the money. If you are using a bank, you will likely also need your account number and routing number as well as the recipient's account and routing numbers.

Step 3

Start tracking. Using the method recommended by the company, be it online or by phone, use your transaction information to see where your money is at any given time and when it has reached the recipient or the recipient's bank account.
