Getting to sleep can be a struggle, though, especially if your mind is racing and you need something distracting to latch onto. For those who prefer music while they're trying to drift off, new research from an unlikely source has some suggestions. The website Mattress Advisor trawled Spotify to round up the data on which songs and artists users turn to both for relaxation and for winding down. The bottom line? If Ed Sheeran has any songs in the key of C major, he's very much in luck.
Sheeran appears more than any other artist in user-generated sleep playlists. Other singers in the top 25 include Coldplay, Sia, Bruno Mars, and Drake. Surprisingly, not every ranking track has a chill tempo or soft sonic landscape; some, like Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars" include some big instrumentation or harder beats. Songs in the key of C, like Jeff Buckley's cover of "Hallelujah," are also the most popular for dozing off.
The Sleep Foundation recommends listening to music with a tempo between 60 and 80 beats per minute, "which you're likely to find among classical, jazz, or folk songs." If droning voices or white noise are more your thing, podcasts like Sleep With Me can be helpful. Ultimately, consistent sleep hygiene is probably your best ally.
