Requesting to stop payment on a check requires contacting your banking institution. For those that bank with Citibank you can request a stop payment on a check by calling the bank or visiting your bank in person. Citibank offers customers the convenience of Citiphone banking, which means you can handle virtually any aspect of your banking needs over the phone. This is helpful when you're in a hurry, not at home or not at your bank location.

Phone Requests

Step 1

Locate your Citibank check card and find the phone number listed on the back of the card. Dial this number to request a stop payment over the phone.

Step 2

Listen to the voice prompts on the phone. Enter the number on the front of your Citibank check card, your Social Security number and your bank account number when prompted.

Step 3

Inform the Citibank customer service representative that you need to stop payment on a Citibank check you wrote. Provide her with the check number, the amount of the check and to whom the check is payable. Consent to pay the fee associated with stopping payment on a check.

In Person Requests

Step 1

Visit the nearest Citibank location to request a stop payment on any check you wrote. Bank tellers are qualified to perform this task on behalf of bank customers.

Step 2

Provide the bank with the check number, your account number and your personal information. You must also provide the bank with the name of the payee and the amount the check is written for.

Step 3

Request that the check is not paid and consent to pay the $30 fee associated with stopping payment of a check. The bank will deduct the fee from your account.
