The chances are good that electronic tax filing won't cost you a thing. In fact, no matter how you file, if you prepare your taxes using software from the Internal Revenue Service's Free File system, or the IRS Free Fillable Forms database, preparing your federal taxes is free. It's possible to file for free even if you hire a tax preparer to do your taxes for you.

Electronic Filing Options and Costs

The IRS does not impose any fees for e-filing a federal tax return. In fact, the IRS encourages taxpayers to file their returns electronically. State governments that allow electronic filing also do not charge fees. The only cost you might run into is a fee a commercial tax software service or traditional tax preparation firm may charge to use its electronic option.
