Wiring money with Western Union can be done in person, over the phone, online or via a smartphone app. Regardless of how you wire the money, some things remain constant. In each case, you'll receive a money control tracking number. Your recipient will need that number to claim the money, and you'll need it to track the transfer if there's a problem.

In Person

You can wire money via Western Union at any agent location. Select the Money in Minutes or Next Day service. In either case, you'll fill out the form and input your own information and that of the recipient. Make sure to use the recipient's real name rather than a nickname or alias. Without an ID that corresponds to the name on the form, the recipient may not be able to claim the money. You'll then provide the funds, either in cash or via a debit card issued by a U.S. bank. The recipient can pick up the money at any Western Union agent.

By Phone

Western Union provides its Money in Minutes service to those who prefer to set up the transfer by phone. Call 1-800-CALL-CASH . You'll provide the required personal information and the information about the recipient, and can pay via a credit card or a debit card issued by a U.S. bank. You also can use this service to wire funds to an inmate in a correctional facility. For that, you'll need to provide his inmate number.

Online Transfers

You have a number of options for wiring money via Western Union online, depending on the speed you need and the destination. For any of these, you'll have to go to westernunion.com and register. You'll provide your name and contact information, birth date, and three security questions that can be used to reset your password if needed. Some options allow you to use a credit or debit card to send funds, while others have you link to your bank account.

Smartphone Apps

Western Union also has mobile apps for the Android, iPhone and iPad that allow you to send funds. Once you download the free app and register, click on the "Send" tab in the upper-left corner. You'll choose where you're sending the money and the amount, and provide the funds via credit or debit card. You'll get an email when the money is delivered and can save the contact information for those you'll send recurring payments to.
