How to Open a SBI Savings Account

The State Bank of India (SBI) offers several account options to its customers, such as an SBI savings account, salary account, current account, business account and non-resident Indian (NRI) account. An SBI savings account allows you to safely accumulate your savings and earn regular interest on your savings. You can also operate your account online and enjoy the benefit of a debit card. Follow the steps mentioned below to open an SBI savings account.

Indian Residents

Step 1

Collect the application form from the information desk of the branch where you intend to open your bank account.

Step 2

Complete the form after carefully reading all the instructions provided in the annexure, attached to the application.

Step 3

Attach your identity proof along with the application. This can include copies of your passport, driver's license, PAN card or a valid voter identity card.

Step 4

Attach your residence proof along with the application. Residence proof can include any utility bill in your name, such as your current bill, telephone bill or your bank passbook with your address on it.

Step 5

Attach two recent passport-sized photographs with your application.

Step 6

Hand over the completed application form to the bank for processing.

Non-resident Indians

Step 1

Download the application form online from SBI's website. Alternatively, if you are at an SBI bank branch, request for an SBI application form from the counter.

Step 2

Complete the form carefully, after reading the instructions stated in the annexure that is attached with the application form.

Step 3

Get your application signed and endorsed by an SBI officer. Alternatively, you can also get your application endorsed at the Indian embassy.

Step 4

Attach copies of your passport as an identity proof along with the SBI application form.

Step 5

Attach copies of your visa showing your immigration status along with the completed SBI application form.

Step 6

Attach copies of your work permit or study permit with the SBI application form.

Step 7

Attach copies of the first page of your bank passbook, showing details of the other bank accounts that you may be holding at the present.

Step 8

Submit your completed SBI application form to the bank for processing, along with two recent passport-sized photographs and the rest of the documentary evidence.

Tip

Carry original passbooks as proof of your banking transactions with other banks. Copies of passbooks (for furnishing details of your bank accounts in other banks) are not always accepted, hence, carrying the original passbooks is a better idea.

Warning

If you are a non-resident Indian applying for a SBI savings account, never go without a valid passport to get your SBI application signed and endorsed by an SBI officer or at the Indian embassy. In case your current passport is new, it is advisable to carry all your old passports along with your current one to the bank or the embassy.
