The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that the 232,660 mechanical engineers in the U.S. earned an average salary of $38.74 per hour, or about $80,580 per year in 2009. Mechanical engineers in the top 10 percent of earners made an average of $56.52 per hour, or $117,550 per year, while the lowest 10 percent made an average of $23.91 per hour, or $49,730 per year. The median 50 percent of mechanical engineers made about $37.03 per hour, or $77,020 per year.

Highest-Paying Industries

The BLS reports that mechanical engineers employed in the "other telecommunications" sector of the industry had the highest average salaries out of any sector, making an average hourly wage of $45.75, or about $95,160 per year. The second highest-paying sector was "spectator sports," where the average salary was $44.76 per hour, or $93,100 per year. Of the top five highest-paying sectors, the fifth highest paying was "federal executive branch," where engineers made an average of $44.02 per hour, or about $91,560 per year.

Highest-Paying States

According to the BLS, the five states with the highest average mechanical engineer salaries in 2009 were Alaska, the District of Columbia, Colorado, New Mexico and Virginia. Mechanical engineers in Alaska made an average of $47.49 per hour, or about $98,790 per year, while those in Virginia made an average hourly wage of $43.34, or $90,140 per year.

Highest-Paying Metro Areas

According to the BLS, the metropolitan area with the highest average mechanical engineer salary in 2009 was Washington D.C., with an average salary of about $53.12 per hour, or $110,490 per year. Engineers in the second highest-paying metropolitan area, San Jose, California, had average salaries of $49.15 per hour, or $102,240 per year.
