Amending your tax return allows you to go back and correct mistakes you made when you originally filed your return, which can result in a bigger refund or require you to pay extra. According to the Internal Revenue Service, it can take up to 12 weeks to process an amended tax return, counting from the time the IRS receives the amended return.

Checking the Status

You can check the status of your amended return online, but you have to wait about three weeks after mailing it in for it to be entered into the system. To check the status, you need your Social Security number, birthday and zip code. However, you can't check the status of certain types of amended returns, including business returns and amended returns with foreign addresses.
