Will an apple a day keep the doctor away? Probably not, but it can't hurt to lead a healthier lifestyle. By staying active and making wise choices, you will set yourself up for a long, happy life. But, a healthy lifestyle has benefits beyond your waistline.

At work you can use fewer sick days and focus better on your job. In your retirement, you can rely less on medications and continue to pursue hobbies that you enjoy.

The average retired couple can expect to pay about $600 per month for their healthcare, and that's not including medications. Going into the situation armed in good health will stretch your dollars and let you keep more of your hard-earned savings. Of course, some things are out of your control -- but why not control what you can?

By quitting smoking now, losing a few pounds, keeping up with your dental hygiene, and remaining active, you'll get the jump on a rich, healthy lifestyle in your sixties and beyond.
