Being on a budget doesn't mean forfeiting your ethics; eating a vegan diet without spending a lot of money is not only possible, but can also be delicious and healthy. The first step to eating vegan on a budget is to do your research. Shop around to different grocers in your area to suss out the best prices, check fliers every week for rock-bottom deals, and use coupons.

Buy frozen vegetables and fruit.

Do your due diligence and research prices on different frozen produce brands to make sure you're getting the best deal. Frozen fruit is perfect for almond-milk smoothies, and peas and corn can be added to salads for an extra kick.

Buy fresh produce on sale and then freeze it.

When fresh produce is on sale it's often cheaper than the frozen variety. Keep your eye open for veggies and fruit that are marked down and then freeze them yourself. Cut the produce into manageable pieces before freezing and make sure you use a sturdy freezer bag to prevent frostbite.

Buying in bulk is every vegan's best friend. Nuts, seeds, beans, and even peanut butter can be bought in bulk, cutting costs and still providing the nutrition you need.

Opt for an “off-brand” item, opposed to an expensive brand name company.

Off-brand products are much cheaper than the alternative and are often secretly vegan since less expensive brands use vegetable oil or margarine in place of butter. Make sure to read the ingredients lists closely to determine if the product is vegan or not. Hello inexpensive vegan garlic bread!

Prepare food in advance.

Everyone knows how expensive vegan restaurants can get, that's why preparing food in advance will ensure that you don't eat out as much. Make a huge batch of chilli or curry and freeze it and you'll be set for the week.

Choose whole foods opposed to processed foods.

Pre-packaged processed vegan food can get pricey, instead opt to make your own vegan dishes from scratch. Using legumes, beans, nuts, and seeds you'll be able to easily recreate processed foods. Not only will you be saving money, but you'll also be eating healthier. Win, win.

Buy only what you need and eat the rest for leftovers.

Throwing out food is basically throwing out money. Only buy enough food for a couple of days, and whatever you don't eat have as leftovers for lunch the next day.
