Teaching Abroad -- Department of State
Consider teaching abroad if you want a government job that requires travel. The Office of English Language Programs of the United States State Department creates English language programs worldwide. These programs are sponsored by American Embassies and Consulates, as well as universities and other institutions. These programs develop curricula, train teachers and obtain textbooks. The English Language Fellow Program sends teachers with a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) degree on ten-month fellowships. The English Language Specialist Program provides short-term overseas jobs to teachers with a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) degree and those with a TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) degree.
Teaching Abroad -- Department of Defense
The United States Department of Defense operates schools for the children of military and civilian personnel overseas. These schools provide American public school-style education for minor dependents. Academic requirements are a baccalaureate degree and a minimum of 40 hours of education courses, along with 18 hours of teacher education courses. Student teaching is also required. For applicants with foreign degrees and courses from non-accredited colleges and universities, the department will perform an evaluation.
