How to Find an Inmate's SPN Number

An SPN number, or system person number, is used to identify an inmate within the penal system. The number must be used when sending packages or money to an inmate. Most institutions do not accept packages or money without the inmate's SPN number included. You can locate the SPN number online. Alternately, if you are unable to search online, you can locate the number by telephone. Depending on your state, the steps may vary slightly.
Access the website for the correctional facility where the inmate is incarcerated.
Select the option to search for an inmate. Depending on the site, the option may be labeled “Inmate Search” or “Prisoner Search.”
Enter the inmate's first and last name. If you know the inmate's date of birth, also enter it in the appropriate field. Click “Search” or “Submit.”
Select the inmate's name from the list of search results. Review the inmate's information. The SPN number will be listed in the “SPN” field. Write down the number and store it in a secure location.

Depending on your state, you may be able to contact the correctional facility where the inmate is incarcerated by phone and request assistance with obtaining the SPN number. You may be redirected to another phone number. Be prepared to provide the inmate's name and date of birth.
