Enjoy Your Turkey — These Stores Will Close on Thanksgiving Day

If you're planning a traditional Black Friday Eve, feel validated and feast on. More than 75 large retailers have announced they will be closed on Thanksgiving this year, with at least 15 others expected to join in.

The website BestBlackFriday.com releases an annual list of national-brand brick-and-mortar closures for Thanksgiving. The most recent version came out on Monday, naming stores from PetSmart and H&M to the Container Store and IKEA. Others which have not yet announced closings but may soon include Bed Bath & Beyond, Barnes & Noble, and Nordstrom.

Just 16 percent of Americans surveyed at the end of September favor stores staying open on Thanksgiving, with more than one-third strongly against it. Doorbuster sales, big discounts available for a very limited period, have been creeping earlier and earlier before midnight on Black Friday. One upside to the domination of online shopping, however, is that those sales have also moved onto the internet.

If you live in some parts of New England, the very concept of stores staying open on Turkey Day may puzzle you. That's because Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Maine have instituted "blue laws" that prohibit the vast majority of stores keeping hours during Thanksgiving proper. However, other chains may push ahead in the rest of the country — look for places like Target, Kohl's, and Best Buy to be ready for shoppers while many are still digesting.
